Last night I spent a few hours speaking with one of my loved ones talking about life and death. We touched on the idea of no birth, no death, and the concept of heaven.
We also talked about suffering.
More simply put, suffering exists; it has a cause; it has an end; and it has a cause to bring about its end.
I further explained that, desire and ignorance lie at the root of suffering.
In the middle of the discussion, my loved one stopped me and said, ” are you talking about materialism?”.
The question was direct and clear, and the answer is that we were talking about is the craving for pleasure , material goods and immortality, all of which are wants that can never be satisfied.
When I got home last night, I listened to one of the most enlightened songs I have ever come across by George Harrison.
George Harrison’s views on death and the material world are intense and can be easily seen in songs like “The Art of Dying” , “Living in the Material World”, “The Inner Light” , and even “Old Brown Shoe”.
One only needs to follow the teachings of George Harrison to touch the voice of many gurus and sages.
As one of my loved ones recently told me, “tell it in your own words”, but like many so-called preachers I prefer to quote those that have also “seen the light”.
Enjoy this wonderful song and sit and reflect, then decide for yourself if you are “brainwashed”.
